Η Γεωργιούπολη βρίσκεται στην κορυφή του κόλπου του Αλμυρού στο Κρητικό Πέλαγος, με το ακρωτήριο Δράπανο και τη βραχώδη ακτή του στα βόρεια και τις μεγάλες αμμώδεις παραλίες προς το Ρέθυμνο στα ανατολικά, μόλις 20 χλμ. μακριά, και τα Χανιά στα δυτικά, μόλις 39,4 χλμ μακριά. Η είσοδος του χωριού στον παλιό δρόμο από τις Βρύσες είναι μια μεγάλη λεωφόρος με ευκαλύπτους. Παλαιότερα ένα μικρό ψαροχώρι, η Γεωργιούπολη είναι πλέον μια πολύ τουριστική πόλη, με πολλά καφέ, ταβέρνες και μικρά ξενοδοχεία και πολυκατοικίες. Η πλατεία της πόλης περιβάλλεται από υπαίθρια καθίσματα που χρησιμοποιούν οι τουρίστες που απολαμβάνουν τα ποτά και τα παγωτά τους.
Η παραλία μήκους 9 χλμ (6 μίλια) είναι το κύριο αξιοθέατο της περιοχής, με την παραλία Καλυβάκι στην άλλη πλευρά του ποταμού επίσης. Η κοντινή λίμνη Κουρνά είναι επίσης μια δημοφιλής εκδρομή με τα πόδια, το ποδήλατο ή το τουριστικό «τρένο».
